A friend of mine is a first year in a MBA program. Her syllabus has reccommended using a IBM Thinkpad. After ordering two of them, they both got the blue screen of death and had hardware failures. She then convinced them to issue her a full refund.

She uses a mac a lot and I explained that for her applications, she can load windows XP using Boot Camp, run it natively and install all of the applications she'd normally be able to run on her IBM but she's a little nervous. Is there anything anyone can think of that will be an issue is she gets a mac or a macbook pro? (She'll be saving about $800 and a hardware headache if she decides to go mac)...

The only thing that comes to my mind is using the 'apple' key on the keyboard instead of the 'alt' key on the IBM.

What applications does she expect to use, that would be specific to her MBA program?

I recall only needing email, web-browser and an Office Suite, for my entire MBA program. There were a couple of applications used in labs, but they were provided on the Uni's machines. In which case a Mac only solution should work fine, so no need for BootCamp.

I think you can still get viruses and such on the Windows partition. And I don't think it runs at full speed from what I've heard, people say it's a little slow? I tried a Macbook-running-Windows at my college and it was slow, but I don't know if Windows was the reason.

Hi,
I am running Windows xP Pro on a 1.83 Ghz MacBook with 1 Gig of ram and it is very fast. In fact it runs faster than my Dell PC laptop which has similar spec. I run Win xP through Parallels Desktop not Bootcamp. Absolutely no problems.

As far as viruses go, avoid going online when using Windows and you should be OK

Cheers
Dave :)

Well I work mith parallels to run some specific business applications, but all the rest I use MS Office, or better Keynotes....

If she can use a MB Pro, she would impress much more... like me:p
