MacBook for videoediting? (64-bit concern & battery)).

Hello, everybody!

I'm considering to get Macbook pro for videoediting mainly. Almost everything is set, except one thing - do you think 64 bits will be essential for this kind of work year later?

Maybe any comments on Macbook beeing futureproof? For how long? 2 years at list? More?

Also - the battery thing, do you think there will be any ways of extending it's batery life (buying next-gen batteries etc..)? I'm new to apple and don't know about their old computers being compatible with newer hardware.

What video formats are you planning to video-edit?

What applications are you planning to use, to edit your movies? (i.e. Apple's iMovie, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro?)

If you're planning to edit DV, then the MacBook Pro's more than enough. You may want to use an external fire-wire hard-drive as a scratch/capture drive.

If Apple doesn't offer high-capacity batteries, then I'm sure there'll be a 3rd-party supplier who will.
 
I'll be using latest FinalCut & hope to use some programs from WinXP (Aftereffects and Avid maybe Edius Broadcast).

1)I'll be shooting in HD [90%]. You think MBP will be enough for that?

About speed of hard disk - I'm hoping to get an external HDD via Firewire...

2)Anybody can comment on that 64-bit concern?
 
I must be dislexic because I missed the "pro" so I thought you were talking about the consumer Macbook. I´m sorry about that.

The MBP should be more than good enough, especially if the apps you use are native. However, there are problems like the heat and whine that you should take a look at. What worries me is that the heat issue is caused by poor manufacturing methods regarding the application of some thermal oils that some brave MBP owners have fixed by themselves but Apple has not responded to this problem properly I´ve read.

I don´t think the 64bit is a big issue in 2006 and I don´t think it will affect your performance much if none at all.

you are buying the wrong computer for editing man...
 
Yeah.. no way will a MBP be able to handle HD editing smoothly...

The 15" model doesn't even have a FW800 port, so it is not like you can hook up a RAID-0 array to it for good mojo too, and coupled with the whine... plus how Merom is due soon... I'd wait till MW Paris at the very least.

64 bits is not essential in 2006, but we are already 1/2 way through 2006, and for all we know 64 bits may be vital in Leopard.

Willy S, yes, laptop definetely... I travel by planes a lot, so have to edit on the go....

Hmm.. all those answers look pretty discouraging.

Everybody, to MacbookPro or not to MacbookPro?
 
64bit so far has promised a lot but delivered very little so i won't worry too much about it.

Missing FW800 although is a big issue coz you will need a fast hard disk to do HD. You should go for the 7200RPM HD BTO and wait for a FW800 expresscard and maybe a 1TB raid external drive. Should work fine then.
