Macbook from eBay, need discs?

My boss bought a macbook off of eBay, and it did not have the startup discs. What happens when we upgradde the HD without them? Can I use his iMac discs?. How machine specific are these discs? Where and how does someone get them?
After installing the drive, the MB sees the drive, but needs the discs to run?

You're gonna need those disks.
imac disks won't work and just buying Tiger won't work (as its for PPC not Intel).

Once Leopard comes out you might get away with just having that, but you will also need to buy ilife.
