MacBook Grey Restart Screen.

My macbook pro just freaked out and went all grey. In the middle of the screen it said I needed to restart the computer and to hold down the power button.

I'm curious what this might be, and what I should do about it. Its under a month old, so I'm sure I can swap it out if its needed.
 
That sounds like a pretty big issue. Call apple and tell them the problem - they'll probably give you a replacement.

Kernal panics are the equivalent of the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH, except cooler.

I should say that it happened 3 times earlier this month, and was induced, I think, because I tried to install a bootleg of pro tools on it.

I deleted it though, and this is the first time its happened since. After I opened it when it was sleeping.

Do you think I should call?

RULE #1: Don't download illegal software.

Call them as soon as you can, and hope to God they'll give you a replacement without them noticing the hacked software.

Do whatever you can to remove it.

It was never installed fully, or opened, I just tried to run it, and the computer freaked.

I deleted all related files.
 
Large amounts of kernal panics can be caused by bad RAM. You should run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your MBP (it should be on the software install/restore disc I think. Hold option when booting with it in the drive) and run the RAM test. Chances are, your RAM will pass, but if you get it a few more times over the weekend, call Apple.

Oddly enough, my PB kp'd last night/this morning just as I was going to bed. I had just closed by eyes, and heard the audio start to skip and repeat in the special way it does. "Uh oh, I know that sound..." I woke up, rebooted it, went to the bathroom, and was greeted upon login to "You have inserted a drive this computer cannot read" and had to rebuild the directory of one of my external drives. DiskWarrior ass-saving count: 2

Breaking the EULA is (usually) illegal.
 
The fact that it's a friends makes it illegal. That kind of software is intended for the end-user only.
 
This sucks, I just thought it was bug a few weeks ago, and I deleted it.

This is the first time it happened since.

Maybe its because I ejected my external HD and there was an error right before I closed it.

:(
 
I should also say that it has some problems with waking up and going to sleep.

Like it will take abotu 30 seconds for it to stop after I close it.

Sometimes.

I think you're being pretty harsh on him about that. SOme people choose to do that. I interned at a recording studio in portland oregon 4 years ago. The first year I was there a rap artist by the name of "The Game" (who would later go on to be signed by G-Unit records) made an apperance. He was with a friend, visiting and stopped by for some free studio time. He had an old laptop (pc) that was using sony's editing program and fruity loops. He told me that he wouldn't pay for any s**t (software) until he got signed. And look at where he is. (you probably aren't framilliar with the rap or recording industry) but really. A lot of people use bootleg software. And quite frankly I'm sick of the way that people on these forums act when they hear about it. They acte shocked and want to pretend like no one does it. Well, you should all know that it happens, it doesnt affect, hurt, interact with your lifes AT ALL. and that you should focus more on the problems that the person who posted the thread had rather than what you noticed about his or her's activities. The person asked for help with KP's. He did not ask for a group chastising of his openly admitted mistake. This just bugs the h*ll out of me and is actually very childish of the ones who do it. Sorry if I ranted or was offending, but people, grow up.
