Hi, I'm just trying to get some idea as to how quickly a Core Duo can encode a DVD compared with my lowly G4.

Soooo.... if you have a MacBook/MacBook Pro/iMac Core Duo or Mac mini Core Duo and Handbrake would anybody mind doing a quick speed check? No need to rip an entire DVD, just about 4 or 5% so as to get a decent average fps figure.

Would you mind trying the following settings:

mp4 file, MPEG4 encoding:

1250kbps average bit rate
128 kbps sound
Full resolution

mp4 file, H.264 encoding:

1250kbps average bit rate
128kbps sound
Full resolution

That's it.

So, if you feel like helping me out, post your average fps after about 5% of the film is ripped.

Thanks so much,

Cheers,
Chundles.

Anybody? I know it's late in the states but it'd only be five minutes worth of effort for anybody awake.

Alrighty, I'll bite, even though I only have a Core Solo. Just to get the ball rolling (hopefully) and because I'm curious to see how it stacks up against the Core Duo.

Specs:
Mac Mini Core Solo 1.5Ghz
1GB RAM (1x1GB)
60GB HD (5400rpm)
OS X 10.4.6

I averaged 11 - 12 fps on a DVD (let it go to 6%), with the settings like those below:

Hey,

I'll get you the exact details later today when I get home, but I did a trial last night comparing my 'old' iBook G4 933Mhz to my new MacBook 2Ghz 1GB RAM.

To cut a long story short, a 4.30s chapter from RENT (Ch 5, One Song Glory) took:
iBook MPEG4 1000kb/s 688x288: 12min 30s
MacBook: 2 min 30s

H.264 iBook; 45 min 17 s
MacBook: 5 min and a few secs.

I'll get the exact details later.
Basicially the Core Due was between 4.9x and 7.7x FASTER than my iBook.

YIKES!! That's a huge difference! Especially in H.264 encoding.

Thanks guys for getting this rolling, I'm hopefully moving to Canberra next year to do a Graduate Diploma in Science Communication that involves travelling round the country for 18 - 20 weeks during the year and I'd reeeeaaally like to replace my iBook with something that's going to be more suitable for on-the-road movie watching in all the crappy places we'd be staying.

GREAT!!!

I spent 10 mins re-writing/editing my above post with my updated details as I'm now home, but when I cicked 'save' is didn't save it and I had to log back into the Forums....

Ok..here goes again...

HardWare:
iBook G4: 933Mhz, 640MB RAM, 4200 IDE-HDD, 133Mhz FrontSide Bus, no other app running.
MacBook: Intel Core Duo 2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 5400 SATA-HDD, 63 Mhz Frontside Bus, no other apps running.
File Source: Ch. 5 from (Time: 4 min 10 s) RENT DVD-rip on an external FireWire400 7200 IDE-HDD.

HandBrake 0.7.1 Universal
MPEG Encoder: FFmpeg, frame rate = source, Avg bit rate: 1000, 2-pass, MP4 file, mpeg-4 video / AAC audio 44.1KHz, 160kb/s Video size: 688x288.
Results:
iBook G4 (Processor Highest) : 12min 17s
MacBook (Processor Auto): 2min 30s = 4.9x FASTER!!!

H.264 Encoder: X264 Main profile, frame rate = source, Avg bit rate: 1000, 2-pass, MP4 file, AVC/H.264 video / AAC audio 44.1KHz, 160kb/s Video size: 688x288.
Results:
iBook G4 (Processor Highest) : 45min 46s
MacBook (Processor Auto): 5min 56s = 7.7x FASTER!!!

Seems to me the biggest gain is in the H.264 encoding. I suspect the Intel chip has some sort of native acceleration for that codec, because that encoding speed is simply AMAZING, nearly Real-time H.264 encoding... WOW!!!

I wonder if a MacBook with 2GB RAM would make any difference...probably not much.... in this case it's the raw processor speed that makes the difference.

As a point of note, I also have QuickTime Pro 7.1.1 but that should be irrelevant....

Just for kicks, I downloaded Handbrake and ran a test - was able to rip a 3 minute segment of House in basically 3 minutes. The ripping and encoding to H264 runs in nearly real time.

I'm really impressed. This is on a 2.0ghz Macbook, 2GB of RAM.

I'm in a helping mood. :p

Here is the first one, ripping the Shawshank Redemption:

And the second one, same film:

Now, important this bit: At the same time as running Handbrake, I had another 11 apps open - and dashboard widgets. I usually, when it is just Safari Mail and Handbrake, rip h264 at 30-50 (usally around 40) frames per second. But I thought this comparison would be useful too.

EDIT: Thats for a 2.0ghz Intel Core Duo iMac, 1.5GB RAM, and 256mb VRAM.

Wow, that really makes me sick thinking how slow my iBook is now. One of the things I just started doing was putting some dvds on my computer to move over to my ipod, and it was so frustrating letting it sit there for 2+ hours.

Hmm..

I hear the program runs lightning fast when encoding a pre-ripped DVD from the hard drive. I'll give that a shot tonight and we'll see.

Ripped the Matrix at default settings last night took exactly an hour (ok, it was really 59 minutes and 59 seconds but oh well) to rip and encode it on a macbook 2.0 gHz 1 Gig RAM.

OK my results on a macbook 2Ghz 1gb Ram

On the film : City of Lost Children (PAL) DVD

First Test : Avg 52.07 FPS

Second Test : Avg 23.06 FPS

Safari & Mail open. I wondered if the DVD film makes a difference so I did the same film as XIII - The Shawshank Redemption but PAL.

First Test : Avg 60.08 FPS

Second Test : AVG 26.07 FPS

So the film does make a difference.

I'll try the same two films in my iMac 2ghz with 2gb tomorow to see if that will give me different results (different drive etc...)

I'm getting around the same results (3 or 4 frames difference) on the machine in my signature :)

Bah, you kids with your fancy "dual-core" processors and your "ram upgrades" and whatnot! The Solo makes up what it lacks in zip with its charm!

I'll edit this with a screenshot later, but my 333Mhz G3 Powerbook is encoding with the same settings as my Core Solo above - and doing it at a blazing average of 1.29 fps. Yeah. Madness, I know. Such a beast!

MacBook as sig, except with 512MB RAM (Taking it back due to shutdown issues, so i have stock RAM installed)

MPEG-4 Video, AAC Audio
FFmpeg encoder
640kbps for average bit rate
average FPS ~85
Peak ~96fps!!!!

Activity Monitor says 170% of CPU used... I love Dual Core so much... :p

I started to rip my DVDs so I can Front Row 'em from an external HDD. Anyway from my MB spec in my sig, I get:

hb13hq.png

Averaged 25.9fps from the three I've done today. Always 24-26fps doing H.264 at those settings with the VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive.

When I tried MPEG-4 (for comparison purposes to H.264) it would rip at stupid speeds around 85-90fps. Too bad the artefacting was more noticable compared to H.264. Still MBs are quick and light years ahead of my old iBook.

Handbrake Benchmark

Powerbook 12" G4 1.33ghz 1.25GB RAM w/ 10+ apps open

Handbrake settings:
H.264 baseline - Mp4 file
video bitrate: 1000kb/s
2 - pass encoding
128kb/s audio

640 x 272 resolution

5.16fps avg

Sure wished it was faster. I guess it's just time to upgrade to mbp. Maybe wait to quad core ....
