macbook hard drive upgrade problem

I was following the instructions on how to replace the hard drive on the pdf posted on the apple website, but after I finished, I took a look at other websites and saw that I was supposed to use a torx screwdriver to remove that metal outer bracket on the built-in drive ( see video on http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html ). this instruction was strangely missing from the Apple manual (a torx driver wasn't even in the list of required tools ) so i didn't do this.. i took a look at my hard drive again, and it seems that I can't really remove my new hard drive without the bracket/pulltab that the original had. the new hard drive also wiggles around a bit.

I can't seem to find a way to get the new hard drive out. Not an immediate problem, since it's running just fine, but does anybody have any ideas on how to remove the harddrive without the bracket/tab? I did a quick search and it looks like nobody's ever had this problem before. Oops

you need something that will get a good grip on it, so use a pair of tweezers that aren't too thin.

offtopic, I recall working on a toshiba laptop that an optical drive that needed to be removed. the problem was the screw that held the drive to the rest of the laptop had been completely destroyed, I had to bring a dremel to drill around it. lesson? sometimes you need to creative

I think the other poster has your only option with tweezers. Just be really careful.

This same thing almost woulda been an issue with me too, and I was baffled that Apple just completely left this part out of the instructions. I gave myself a little faith though and after seeing that the old hard drive had that bracket and the new one didn't, I took an impromptu trip to the hardware store to get that little tork screw driver thingy (I dunno what its called exactly lol), I had the old HD in hand to find the exact right one, and then I quickly went back home and carefully removed the shell and put it on the new HD before sliding it in.

It only made sense to me. Even though Apple was very weird to leave it out, it was still kinda obvious it needed to be done. I hope you don't feel stupid though lol hey you were just trying to follow directions so can't blame you for that.

i actually got the bracket off of my hard drive with a very small screw driver that fit in the grooves. not the best thing, but it worked.

i would advise trying to take out the hard drive and put the bracket on if you could though......but be careful
