Hi!

Another macbook HDD question i'm afraid.... :)

I want to buy a new HDD for my rev-a macbook. I'm thinking either 160gb or 200gb. The only problem I have with this is that my friend spooked me a little bit saying the macbook only accepts certain forms of 2.5" SATA drives. Is this true? Do 2.5" SATA drives come in different dimensions? I thought they were all the same form...? If they do though i'd be mega grateful if anyone could help identify what form HDD I need - e.g h x w x d.

Thanks alot, you're lovely people, i've lurked here for quite a while :D

2.5" SATA drives come in two different heights: 9mm high (sometimes called "1/8th height") and 12mm high (sometimes called "1/6th height"). You need a drive that is 9mm high; the 12mm won't fit. Apart from that, all 2.5" drives have exactly the same width and depth, and they all have holes for screws in exactly the same places, so any 9mm high drive will fit.

Hey,

Thanks gnasher, that's really helpful

I've been looking at http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/108779

It says the spec height for this drive is 9.5mm... i know it's only .5mm difference but would this still mean it wouldn't fit or would it just be a wee bit tight????

thanks again :)

I can't comment from personal experience, but I read one one forum (can't remember which) that it wouldn't - but if someone knows different, I'm sure they'll say!

BTW I'm not sure if you've used eBuyer much, but it's a company you definitely have to watch, I think its may have pulled its socks up (it's promised theregister.co.uk that it had enough times), but less than 2 years ago it had loads of unhappy customers and there was more than one site called ebuyersucks, Radio 4's ran critical consumer reports etc. etc.

In my personal experience, they sent me the wrong display 3 times (I took a refund after the third time) and most people I know have had some problem at some stage with them.

Buy from OWC (macsales.com) imo. All the hard drives they sell in their MacBook/MacBook Pro section fit, so you don't have to worry about that. They usually have really good prices as well.

As gilesybaby posted a link from a UK website, I would assume that another UK site would be preferable.

Thanks for the info guys and dolls. Hope to buy next week! Didn't know about ebuyer, I always thought they had a pretty decent rep. That's what I love about forums - you find things out that you just wouldn't normally. Top stuff! :)
