Macbook "hissing" sound upon wakeup

Has anybody noticed the kind of "hissing" sound, when a Macbook wakes up from sleep? Is this normal?

PS: beware, plastic siding surrounding white macbook display is very prone to scratching I believe. mine came with small swirling scratches on one side of the display, out of the box, but it is only visible when direct light is focused on the area and at a 90-100 degree angle. because the plastic is somehow matted, under neon light or dimmer light conditions and when tilting the display all the way back, the scratches dissapear.

I don't have a MacBook, but just out of interest, does it hiss if the speakers are muted?

I think that is just the hard drive spinning up... I believe it "parks" itself when the computer goes to sleep. Mine does this too.

my macbook pro also has produced this "hissing" a couple times upon waking from sleep. I'm pretty sure it is just the hard drive spinning up quickly- unless I'm wrong...

My iBook makes a bit of a clunking noise when it wakes up, and it seems to emanate from the optical drive, but I doubt it'd ever cause a hissing.

I have it too and I think it's completely normal. My white macbook (2.0GHz+superdrive) makes kind of a motor-like whirr sound when I open the lid. It's the only sound it ever makes (no moo, whine, etc)

If I had to guess, it's coming from the superdrive. It doesn't sound like the hard drive at all. It does seem a little more pronounced when I have a CD/DVD in the drive.

It's not the speakers either, I checked.

That's normal. My ibook and Macbook have both made the whirring noise upon wakeup. I like it.

I don't know if we're talking about the same thing, because the hissing I hear is continuous and happens whether the Macbooks was sleeping or just shut down. But my hard drive appears to make a very high pitched sound, which intermittently stops everytime the hard drive is accessed (at first I though it was the display). Is this normal . It doesn't really bother me that much, but when you're in a very quiet room (i.e. a library) it can get a teensy weensy bit annoying (although its only loud enough for the person using the MB to hear).

Mine only "hisses" when there aren't external speakers of head phones attached so i assumed it was the internal speakers themselves hissing.

Fair enough, but you'd agree it's not a hiss, right?
