macbook: HOT, fans going in sleep, won't wake

I put my macbook to sleep last night plugged in at 100% battery charge. Everything was fine and normal.

When I opened it this morning it did not wake up; the screen stayed dark. The fans were also going full blast, yet the machine was hotter than I've ever felt it. It would not wake from sleep, and I had to do a hard shut-down. I let it cool down completely and then powered it back on. It started up normally and seems ok now.

Anyone know what's going on? I've read about people on this board having this issue with G5 towers I think... (came home to find the fans roaring on a sleeping G5) I'm worried... please help.

today was the first time. However, yesterday it locked up as I was attempting to eject a server and I had to restart it. Don't know if it's related or not, but I've definitely had to restart more in the last few weeks than the first few I had it. (I never had to restart my ibook at all... I'm starting to really miss that little guy. )

Oh, and when the MB gets really hot I hear this soft clicking noise. It's intermittent. Again, I don't know if it's related, but it can't be good, I'm thinking.

The freezing after not ejecting a server is normal. Is it possible that it was frozen and it didn't go to sleep when you shut it so it got rlly hot?

hmm, well, not sure why it would be normal for ejecting a server to crash the computer... but that's not really my concern atm.

It had been functioning perfectly normally before I put it to sleep last night. I'd been online and in itunes, and all the programs had closed out normally.

I've had this happen twice with my machine. It's scary, but I'm not sure it's causing any long term damage, besides wear.

Not sure what causes it. It's as if the machine fails to go to sleep properly when you close the lid.

well, I hope you're right, gloss. But I'm still worried. Why does it happen? It certainly shouldn't, and never did on any of the 4 apple laptops that I've previously owned.

Same question here. I'm assuming (hoping?) it's a software issue.

install coreduotemp and tell us what the temperature is. You might have a very hot MacBook.

I run coretempduo all the time. Idles around 60 C, gets up to ~68 C working with a few applications like word/preview/camino/mail/itunes, hits around 80 playing warcraft 3, installing updates, or doing other more processor intensive tasks.

I don't think those temps are excessive. It could idle a bit lower, but I can even use it on my lap and just get a bit warm. Certainly doesn't seem like anything to worry about. My MB has discoloration, mooing, whining, and now this random freak out, but at least heat has never been a problem.
