my wonderful macbook sleeps funny.

for example, i'm watching a video and i close the lid, the video continues playing for several seconds and then the sound skips for a little bit, and then it sleeps. and at times when i try to wake it, it seems to take forever and i loose patience and reboot!

is this a legit issue? do other macbook people experience this behavior?

thanks,
r.

X86 based machines take for ever to go to sleep. The PPC chips seem to go to sleep lightning fast. If I'm not mistaken a good deal of people have reported on how long it takes their X86 macs to fall asleep compared to their PPC macs.

and it just happened again.

put to sleep, doesn't wake up, needs to be rebooted.

Talk to Apple about the fact it won't wake up. Others have encountered the same problem and come away with either a replaced battery or logic board and a waking MacBook. :)

Is this only for the laptops? My iMac CD appears to go to sleep just as fast as all my PPC systems did.

I honestly don't know. This is just a complaint I've read about off and on. It could just be overly paranoid people. It is true however that most X86 PC take longer to go in and out of sleep (it could be a windows thing and not a mac thing). It might have carried over on macs. I'm a PPC user so I really would need more hands on time with an intel mac to know. It also could be an isolated defects in some intel macs (like only a certain amount made at X date have the problem). So it's either people being paranoid, it could be notebooks that take longer to go in and out of sleep, or it is an isolated problem.

In the case of the original poster, that person's problem seems to be a defect or a software problem. I'd just do a clean re-instal of OSX or just take it to the apple store.

Try pausing everything BEFORE shutting the lid. My MBP had similar problems if I didn't pause music or videos before putting it to sleep.

If it's just taking "a while" to wake up, they'll just shrug you off like usual. However, if it actually ISN'T waking up, and needs to be rebooted, they need to fix that for you.

That's not true. Yes, X86 is percieved to take longer, but that is due to Windows. Windows takes longer due to the time required to send the standby signal to everything, stop system processes, or whatever it does that it does.

If, however, you run a well oiled machine, it is possible that it will actually suspend and resume faster than OS X on a PPC. Don't believe me? I just suspended my PPC mac mini in 4 mississippis. it takes less that that for XP to suspend for me.

People are looking at OS X64 and saying OMG new CPU architecture, everything's so different. and to a point it is, but there's no reason why it should take so long to suspend and resume (unless the whole suspend module was re-written for OS X64, but then it's an OS issue, not hardware).

Is it just me, or does this not make much sense for the argument you were (or at least the one I thought you were making...) making.
