Latency :
121ms

Download speed:
84kb/s

Upload Speed:
303kb/s

im not entirly sure what these figures mean but i know i have a 2meg connection so i presume my download speed should be much faster!
any clue whats going on it was working perfectly just last week!

Restart your modem, first off. Your upload speed is about right, but your download speed is around true dial-up rates.

you realize of course that MegaBit download speeds are whatever your speed is times 8, right? (8,000 Div 8 == 1000KBytes/sec)

8Mbit == 1000 KBytes/sec
7Mb == 875KB
6Mb == 750KB

etc, etc, etc.

Do you have the latest Airport update installed?

On that though, it should say something different. I just ran the test, I'm on a 3Mb connection and I get a download speed of 2600ish. If I download a file, this translates to 384kbps.

84kb/s is too slow. I had that download speed when I was on a 768kb connection. His should be higher.

Could it be a DNS thing? I've read posts here about specifying DNS servers in system preferences to get internet access back up to speed...

(don't remember the details though, maybe someone else can post)

My MacBook is much slower on wireless than my iMac and I've never worked out why. It's normal speed when plugged into the router

Did you try plugging it into the wall using an ethernet cable?

If you're testing speeds using wireless, maybe it's your wireless reception. Maybe it's just weaker than your brother's laptop. Or maybe it's not weaker, and you're comparing the wireless performance of the 2 computers when they're not even in the same room.

What is your brother using his laptop for? If he is constantly downloading it could be throttling the bandwidth available to you.

Sean :)

i havent tried plugging directly into my modem but will later on when i get home, will let you know what happens. Its quite the opposite id be the one using the connection for downloading much more than my brother. I just think its very strange as it was working perfectly last week. one other thing was that i came across a post where someone had that same problem after downloading the program parallels which ive done recently to so i appzaped it and everything worked again i had great download speeds and pages were loading as quickly as they used to, but it only lasted for about 5 minutes and everything went slow again! im in college at the moment and on its network and its working perfectly! im so confused :confused: what could possably be causing this?

ok well i checked out the connection when wired and this is what i came up with, i did a couple tests wired and wireless just so i could compare.

wireless 1st try
down 525kb/s
up 303kb/s
latency 348ms

Wireless 2nd try
down 425kb/s
up 295kb/s
latency 161ms

wireless 3rd try
down 625kb/s
up 297kb/s
latency 170ms

Wired 1st
down 788kbs
up298kbs
latency180

wired 2nd
down 2422kbs
up295kbs
latency166ms

wired 3nd
down 2408kbs
up 297kbs
latency 167ms

my connection seems to be back to normal now, but was wondering should there really be such differences between the wired and wireless download speeds?
