Can the macbook's IR port communicate with IR devices other than remotes? (PDAs, Cell Phones, etc....) Either under XP or Mac OSX. Or is it strictly for Front Row/Apple Remote?

Using any TV remote with Macbook Pro

Well I've recently bought a Mini Display -> Dvi and have been watching some nice movies and videos on my TV. However I'd like to ask if it is possible to somehow make the Macbook 'learn' IR commands from an ordinary remote such as a VCR remote that is lying around.

I'd really not want to spend more money on another remote. So if it can somehow support other remotes please let me know, either through software or a hack of some sort.

Nope. It's the Apple Remote (or a remote that can emulate it) or nothing.

waste of resources, couldnt they make apple remote blue tooth?

Sure, but then you have the same problem as the Sony PS3, where the large majority of universal remotes cannot control the unit (although Logitech did create a new Bluetooth bridge for their Harmony remotes).

yeah but seeing posts in this thread obviously via IR most of them cant anyway. :)
