I was using a rather cpu intensive app, then everything went crazy (the cpu moniter said 2000%!) and then my MacBook just shut itself off without an explanation. Does this sound like the notorious random shutdown problem? I've been running it for around four hours since with no problems. Opinions welcome.

Maybe it over heated. Laptops shut themselves off for security reasons when they over heat.

I don't think that you can judge on one shutdown. Since you are now running fine I would not worry too much. You might try and simulate the conditions under which you had the problem and see if it shuts down again? If you can repeat the problem this will give you a much better idea of what, if anything, is going on. :)
