I ordered a new Macbook 2.16 GHz (white model, stock with no customization) from apple.com and it arrived yesterday. The Macbook does not recognize the ethernet cord unless I shove it all the way in. Furthermore, if I lightly tug on the ethernet cord, it comes out! It does not lock into place.

So I called drove one hour to the Thousand Oaks store and did a direct exchange after testing my Macbook with their own ethernet cord and finding out that the jack is defective. I drove an hour back to my home, only to find out that this new Macbook has the exact same problem!

Has anyone else here experienced this?

Yes, I have noticed this on several pairs of CAT5e cables from both Systimax and AMP net connect brands. I don't have any issue with the connection, albeit the cable can be very easily pulled out and does not "click" into the eth jack securely.

It is not at all the cables' fault. I have plugged the exact same cable into my iBook, and it clicks in fine. It does not come out when you tug on it. I also tried it with a CAT6 cable, and got the same results.

Well damn, how long has ethernet been around? 20 years? You'd think this wouldnt be an issue.

I distinctly remember this issue in my dorm room. I assumed it was because I was using an E-Bay-bought cable and didn't pursue the issue because it never became much of a problem except when I wanted to move it to a new location (i.e., typically desk to bed or chair or something) with the cable still plugged in.

However, back home, using cables that came with my Linksys router, it's not an issue.

I agree 100%. The cables are of excellent construction and connect soundly to many other systems of mine, both at work and home. It's the BlackBook's eth jack that is not set right (physically) in the case, at least this is probably the issue.

Both our MacBook Pros have exactly this same problem now - but they were fine for six months after we bought them. Then suddenly the ethernet cable began slipping out of my wife's MBP. She's a bit rough on her Macs, so I thought it was something she had done. I brought an assortment of Cat5e and "Cat6" cables home from work - all of which clicked in place solidly in hubs, patch panels, PCs and my office Mac, and all of which slipped out of her MBP's ethernet jack. The next day the ethernet cable began falling out of my MBP also.

I had not yet contacted Apple about this because cables are a pain and the AirPort Extreme N base station we got moved our Photoshop files to & from our file server just fine. Now that FiOS has come into our area there are a dozen wifi networks visible and our wireless throughput has suddenly plummeted, even in the 5Ghz band. Looks like I'm going to have to call Apple about getting our jacks fixed...

I'm sorry you got the short end of the stick. However, I'm rather surprised you didn't test the new machine in-store before you left, could of save some time (yeah.. what's the odds happening twice or three times?)... Afterall, one hour is a long time when driving.

During the years this happened to me with almost every of my iBooks, Macbooks and Macbook Pros. Over a dozen of laptops. Never happened with laptops from other manufacturers. Interstingly the iMacs and other desktop Macs never had the issue.
What is causing this? I dont handle my laptops roughly.
