Hey all! Hope everyone is doing well….bc I sure am not. So the short of it is that my MBP battery ran dead and I tried to charge it with MagSafe and got the blinking red light. Tried charging it with usb c but no dice. Also tried disconnecting the battery per IFIXIT instructions but again no luck. If you have anything that can help me, I’d be super grateful. Thanks yall!

Good news. Got it working. Very strange though - I had a Samsung USB c brick and cable and that was the only way it would charge. Seems that this is a common issue with Sonoma and because that was so freaking stressful lol I will be downgrading back to Ventura now haha. Thanks anyways yall and feel free to chime in if you think something else could be at play

That seems more like a coincidence. A battery depleted enough to cause the device to auto shut down shouldn’t be a problem. If it were that way for months… Maybe… Although, nowadays deep discharged batteries can often be recovered, it just requires extra charging time to jump start them, so to speak.

Anyway… With that thought I did a quick search, and the problem appears (indeed) related to the charger more so than the battery.

If the indicator light flashes

If the indicator light on the MagSafe 3 connector flashes amber repeatedly, try these steps:

  1. Disconnect the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable from your Mac and from the power adapter.
  2. Unplug the USB-C power adapter from the wall outlet.
  3. Use a dry cloth to wipe the MagSafe 3 port and MagSafe 3 connector. Make sure both the port and connector are dry and clear of any debris.
  4. Make sure the USB-C port on the power adapter and the USB-C connector are clear of any debris.
  5. Restart your Mac.
  6. Plug the USB-C power adapter into the wall outlet, connect the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable to the adapter and to your Mac, then try charging again.
If the indicator light continues to flash repeatedly, contact Apple.

Thanks for the reply! So it was only 4 days it was dead for. That said, I can see why it may take awhile to turn back on. However, I don’t think it could be related to the charger as neither an Apple branded USB C or MagSafe worked - even with two different bricks. I had no success until I tried the Samsung USB C cable I have. So I think based on some other reviews I’ve read on Macrumors and Reddit, that it must be an issue with Sonoma verifying the Apple branded chargers once the battery is depleted since I never had this issue on Ventura. Since all this, I’ve now reverted to Ventura and will test to see if the same issue comes up again. If not, then I think it’s safe to relegate this to a Sonoma issue and hopefully Apple will release a fix so Macs don’t keep getting bricked when the battery dies!
