I got my MacBook Pro 14” few weeks ago and I was looking forward to connect it to my ultrawide LG 34WP85C monitor (3440x1440). I was surprised to see that fonts are extremely ugly. After reading almost all threads here about font rendering and apple M1, got to the conclusion that I need at least a 4K monitor to get good fonts.
But when I connected to my work HP E273Q 27” QHD 2560x1460, fonts were much better than on the 3440x1440, yes it is far from the internal Retina display but somehow acceptable. Then I connected my MacBook to friends’s Samsung 34” CF791 also 3440x1440, fonts were OK, again not like retina but very usable. I tried 27” 4K and 32” 4k monitors and the font is even better than on the HP QHD or Samsung CF791.
All tested with USB-C and HDMI ports, no visible difference between the 2.
LG 34WP85C - 3440x1440 - 109 PPI - ugly fonts
HP E273Q - 2560x1440 - 109 PPI - OK fonts
Samsung CF791 - 3440x1440 - 109 PPI - OK fonts
27” 4k, 32” 4k - good fonts on default resolution and and much better scaled down.
Confused now, is the LG 34WP85C faulty? But most people are complaining about the font rendering on other 3440x1440 screens with M1. Or is the Samsung monitor more compatible with the Mac M1? sounds like non sense.
I’m thinking about giving a try to another 34” 3440x1440 because it’s the most practical size for me. Any recommendation?
Many thanks
