Long story short:

My MacBook needed repairs (discolouration) and was sent in for repairs. The top case was replaced and the machine works fine. One problem: two screws are missing.

Nextbyte (the Australian Apple reseller) claims that I was the one who lost them, not them. Basically I am being called a liar when infact I gave them my laptop to fix with ALL screws intact.

What can I do about this problem? I am sure I have never attempted to unscrew my laptop and that it was given in for repairs with all screws. They refuse to take responsibility, claiming that they received it without any and that it was me who lost them (which I did not!).

Certainly is, especially when I have just realised that my machine "squeaks" without those two screws?

I am able to "push" the plastic sides IN... and it'll simply pop back out, because the screws are meant to hold them in place? Now my plastic just springs back out. Machine still in one piece though.

Considering 2 screws would cost them just about nothing, I'm surprised they would do this. Have you tried speaking to different store representatives?

I have contacted various other resellers in my state asking for part numbers for the screws, if they would sell me any, or whether they had any spares to give me. I'm in Australia (Sydney, NSW) and it's a weekend right now, so I will contact them monday morning.

Actually I think they do. Yes, I am aware that there are cosmetic screws that are there just because the other side has them, to balance it out, however without those particular screws my MacBook makes a clicking/squeaking noise whenever you push the sides together, as the plastic will spring inwards and then 'pop' out by itself without any screws there.

The problem has been 'solved' now. Repair manager gave me a call and offered to take 2 screws from the ex-demo machine to give to me instead. I wonder why they dont just have spare screws?

This whole situation seems a bit, er, screwy.

:D

Glad to hear they finally worked it out for you, though.

i would be pissed about the screws too. But i have a brand new macbook and even with those screws it flexes and creaks right where those screws are. its annoying and i thought it was a defect when in fact almost all do it. just dont notice it until you press on it.

When I disassembled and then reassembled my blueberry iBook, I had two screws left over. I had absolutely no idea where they came from or where they were supposed to go.

Of course, I'm far from a pro. So, if these folks are pros, well, they screwed you. So screw them and get your screws.

A veritable friend, and on the Internet, even. :)

Same thing happened to me when i sent my PB in and the genius even tried to suggest that i'd opened the machine myself and lost them on re-assembly. How apalling. He replaced mine on the spot though

First of all are you sure you were talking to a manager? You need to contact the managment over there and let them know what happened. If they continue to give you trouble then contact the Better Business Bureo (sp?). But they may only be in the US im not sure. Also contact Apple and let them know whats going on. ;)

Today you suggested he call Apple and let them know what is going on. What is he supposed to be calling Apple about?

Ummmmmm, ok. Are they fake screws?

Yes I am being told that on the MacBook there are two cosmetic screws only that are there, simply to balance out the machines looks because the side that has the optical drive, has two screws which serve a purpose?

So the two on the left are just there, for looks. The are actual screws though and would never have to be removed for any repairs.
