In the near future I’m really looking forward to purchasing a MacBook Pro 14" M1 and I have been a Windows PC user all along.

My question is, does the M1 get really hot? Because I’ve heard that the M2s gets hot.

I don’t do video or any hardcore graphic editing, just basic stuff like emails, browsing, and using Office apps.

Any processor “gets hot”. That’s why there’s a fan on it or passive cooling if it’s not needed for running for long periods with applications.

I have the MacBook Air, and it would easily do what you described. With the MacBook Pro it has an active cooling fan so would never throttle with what you’re doing.

If you mean just physically hot, like the base of it getting hot, I couldn’t imagine the MacBook Pro would get hot because my MacBook Air barely gets warm to the touch if I’m playing a game or something.

I looked at the cheaper version below. Well, not much cheaper, but still a bit cheaper.

13 inch MacBook Pro M2 chip with 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 256GB SSD

Would you think this would be more suitable for my needs which is doing basic things as mentioned before?

I would just go for the base 8 core GPU unless that’s not available. None of the things you mentioned will do anything better with those two extra cores.

You didn’t mention RAM, but many will encourage getting 16 GB. If you’re one of these people with dozens of chrome tabs open, that might be a good investment. If you’re buying directly from Apple, this might be a good use of the return policy. If you were kind of on the fence, try it out and if it’s not working, then exchange it.

It’s hard to say with storage size because only you know how much stuff you like to carry with you. My instinct is it would be fine unless you want to load a bunch of movies on it for entertainment. Look at your current laptop and see how much stuff you have on it.

Ok, im getting the MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro 8 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD.

Plus, this model even has a built in HDMI port which would be very useful for connecting my external monitor without having to use an adapter.

But, I would have to save up for this beast 😂

Well, in a few months, there might be an M2 version. You might find a deal on a new M1 model or even someone that wants to upgrade and sell their old one.

OP:

Are you in the US?
If you are, be aware that the 2021 design MBP 14" (16", too) models are ON SALE at places like Costco, bestbuy, amazon, etc.

You can get the base model MBP 14" right now for 1,599 -- 400 off.
That's as good a deal as you'll ever see on a new Mac product, anywhere.

There will be new m2 versions of the MBP 14/16 later this year, but they'll be little-changed other than the chip upgrade.
And they'll sell at full price.

But again ... 400 off... makes the just-slightly-older tech a really good deal.

Agreed. At $1599 the MBP14 is really hard to beat. I love mine (and paid full boat). It's my favorite mac since we got our 2015 iMac which is still running strong.
