Macbook not auto mounting SD/USB storage

My wife's macbook pro is not mounting any SD card or USB memory stick automatically.

Every time she needs to start Disk Utility and from there she sees the storage and with a secondary click she can issue a mount command which works as it should.

Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Thanks will give it a try.
Sorry for the newb question: this is her work machine so could not cope with downtime. Does resetting the NVRAM entail risks of the machine not restarting ?

I've learned to never say never but the likelihood of it not restarting is miniscule.

An NVRAM reset aside, I sincerely hope that you are backing-up. At some point, someday a computer you rely on won't work. You need to have a plan B.
