Just thought it'd be interesting to see how many people are comfortable using their Macbook (any version) on their laps due to the heat.

I don't use it directly on my lap (or sofa or bed or whatever soft and/or tender surface) for extended periods. Didn't have my iBook G4 or PoweBook G3 (Pismo) directly on my lap either. Of course just to check mail or whatever on the go I can open the laptop and balance it on my knees while checking, but if you want to work with it for a while and/or with heavy applications it just gets too hot for comfort.

That's why I, as mentioned many times before, use one of these... ;)

I always thought that you were never supposed to put your laptop on your lap (I know how stupid that sounds) or any other soft surface (i.e. mattress, carpet, etc). In 3 years of owning a Sony laptop, I never dared put it on my lap for fear of something inside overheating and dying.

It's not a laptop. Its a notebook:p

I use my 2Ghz MB on my lap for long periods of time, and it doesn't bother me. I would say its only slightly hotter than my iBook G4:)

I do it all the time. I don't have much choice unless I want to do it at the dinner table, which just isn't convienent for my mom sometimes

How serious are the actual heat issues though associated with the current line of MacBook & MacBook Pro's? I have a MacBook purchased a week ago and have not experienced any significant heat issues, but can they be aggrevated by putting them on soft surfaces for extended periods of time? And what is the risk of having a MacBook being too hot?

I do it just on the go when I want to quickly check my email or something. It's not the heat that bothers me because it doesn't get hot, but it's just not healthy for males to have a portable that close to their essentials.

I picked up a lap desk for the MBP to use most of the time (i'm a guy and although the built in birth-control of the heat isn't a bad thing right now, i'm afraid of causing any long-term effects). However, for short-term use, I have no problem with putting it on the lap.

I have a MacBook Pro...but I voted anyway

No, the heat doesn't bug me - if anything, my palm rests and keyboard are annoying...but definitely not the bottom of the computer.

Well its pretty much like the New laptop syndrome. You start rebelling against things which are out of the ordinarary. At first i got my macbook , two days ago i was like wt... even the kb felt so hot that i felt like i was putting my hands into boiling water. But in due time i realized that these minor inconviences was temporary. Yes, using the macbook for couple of hours and my thighs start to sweat, but thats only when i am in my boxers. You dont feel anything if you are wearing shorts or jeans. :D
