I just bought a MacBook (cheapest model). In general it seems to be quiet, but the DVD drive makes a strained mechanical noise each time the computer wakes up from sleep mode, or a disc is inserted or ejected. Is this sound normal? Do ALL MacBooks sound like this? The drive plays fine, with the exception of a home-recorded dual layer DVD.

Yeah, mine did make a little grinding noise when a disc was in and it was being brought back from sleep mode. Not a big issue though, it was like a leg massage.

I'm sure it's perfectly normal. My MacBook Pro has done this ever since I got it back in February and I've heard others mention it as well. It annoys me because it's so loud in a classroom setting, but in most other situations, it's not such a big deal.
