Macbook or iMac? Macbook head to head PC?

Hi all,
2 questions... 1/ is a Macbook pro as good as an iMac when it comes to iLife stuff and DVD rendering and burning? Which is "chunkier" and has more grunt?

What other issues or considerations if we throw in that I'm an apprentice designer, and will be learning Quark and Photoshop on this machine? Whats the maximum RAM, etc?

2/ Can Macbooks plug & play head to head with a PC laptop? A mate is on the "dark side" of the computer world, and but it would still be cool to be able to LAN games as possible. What are the potentials for LAN with PC laptops?

The ONLY two things that differentiate Apple laptops from PC laptops:

Apple laptops can run both MAC OSX & Windows
Apple laptops look prettier and are built prettier.

So stop thinking of it so much as an incompatibile Apple. Its the same thing as the rest, just prettier!
