MacBook or iMAC

Hello,
I am a windows user. I have Dell Desktop and now plan to switch to MAC.

With the money I have I can buy MacBook 2.0 GHz/iMac 1.83 GHz. I see that with iMac I get more functionality for money (Dual Layer DVD, 17" monitor, bigger HD) but with MacBook I get mobility.

I am looking forward to your views about the choice to make. Any help?

It totally comes down to whether you want the mobility IMO. Why would you not go for a bigger screen and more features if you don't need mobility?

Well I am in the same boat you are in, but I have decided on the iMac, Simply because it is soooooo much computer for its price. Also in some aps you will need to max out the ram in order for them to run fast or smoothly. I plan on getting one gig in the iMac, and like you said the hd is much bigger.

You could always get an old ibook on ebay, real cheap( many still have warranty) and buy imac, you will spend a bit more, but it may be worth it.
 
I was in the same boat. I chose the iMac, mainly because I wasn't very impressed with the Macbooks. I got a 20" and it is great.

Having no portability sucks at times. I will eventually add a MBP/MB to my arsenal though. So it is ok.
 
Any difference betn 1.83/2.00

One thing I forgot to mention is the processor speed. In iMAC I get 1.83 GHz while in MacBook I get 2.00. I also see a note that the OS changes the speed of the CPU based on the situation. So does it matter to go to 1.83 GHz?

You probably won't notice much of a difference between 1.83 and 2.0 GHz. You could always go for the 20" iMac if the slightly faster clockspeed is important to you.
 
i have just sold a imac for a macbook :)

differnt situation though as i needed mobility and my imac was G5.

I loved my imac to bits, if i could afford i would keep it.
Such a good machine i say imac!
 
I'd say imac, just because they don't have any defects and some macbooks do, which can be frustrating. Also, it seems like you don't really *need* portability, and as you said, you get a lot more computer for your money with the imac. IMO both of them are among the best values ever offered by apple (the 17" imac and 1.83 macbook especially), so you're making a good choice either way.

I have a macbook, but lust after imacs. I absolutely must have portability, though.
 
'huge' iMac fan. cant go wrong with it.

iMac CAN be a limited portable. there are decent cases available albeit a bit large to fit the 20" beast in it.

also, what are you doing with the computer when you need the portability. i found that a ibm laptop is a good option for when i 'have' to be mobile for a while as i mostly use internet/email and 1-2 windoze work programs. other posters idea of a cheap used ibook could be viable as well.
 
I'm in the same boat as you and decided (after much agony) to buy an iMac after they are updated next. I am a student and previously had a 12" Powerbook G4. I found that mainly I only used the portability of my Mac to check email, surf the web, and type papers. Anything serious work (CAD, Photoshop, etc) I do in labs or use my parent's or girlfriend's computer.

I purchased a Nintendo DS Lite recently and have great hopes for the Opera browser so I can bring it with me to check email and look at non-flash websites. I thought about a PDA or an old ibook but the DS was too tempting with it low pricetag and touchscreen functionality....Oh yeah and it plays fun games and can be a .mp3/mpeg4 player with the right attachment. I can't type papers on it but I really don't care.

I hope your iMac works out for you and I hope that they update soon so that I can purchase :eek: ...
