Hello

My Macbook arrived last week via UK education. It was fine until I installed more ram (total 2gb) and a new HD (100gb, 7200 Seagate Momentus).

I installed the ram first and tested it ram using Memtest - all fine (from Orcalogic in the UK).

Since I have installed the HD (which again seemed to all go fine - OSX runs without flaw) the fan seem to come on full blast after the Macbook has been shut down. This seems to happen because the bottom of the machine is indeed very hot (something still running perhaps?). To my knowledge this is something that would continue indefinately - that is until the battery ran out or until I hold down the Power button for a second time (the first being when I shut it down initially of course). Once I have turned it off for the second time the fan turns off and it cools down naturally.

One thing to note is I have only witnessed this whilst on the move and therefore the Macbook was placed in my bag, wrapped in a towel (for protection) before it happened. However, I cannot see how this would effect the heat/cooling system in the machine other than to block the ventilation holes perhaps. Anyway, I will turn it off without putting it in a bag or anything and see if it does the same shortly.

The other thing to note is this has happened only since I installed Logic Pro 7.2 on it, however again I cannot see this affecting it since I have the same operating system (10.4.6) and Logic on my Intel iMac.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreicated. :)

I don't think this has anything to do with Logic Pro. Anyway, make sure if your macbook goes to sleep, if is not, then because the lid is closed it will generate to much heat, just a thought.

Hi Mike

I wondered if I had not let it completely shut down myself (I assume that is what you mean by sleep), but since the first time it happened I have made sure it is turned off before I close the lid - and it has still happened.

Anyhow, turned it one and used it a bit over lunch, and turned it off again. It didn't do it this time (when I didn't wrap it in a towel!). However I did notice the fan was on whilst it was on, this didn't happen before I put the hard-drive in.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Ppl

Right it would appear the fan turning on once the computer is asleep seems to have ceased; perhaps this was due to putting the macbook in a towel with little air to breath?

The fan is now on all the time however, as soon as I turn it on - is this normal? I can't imagine it is, esp since many people report is coming on about 67 degrees using CoreDuoTemp. Mine runs at about 50 on starting. It also feel very hot as compared to when I first got it. Could this all to be with Spotlight indexing my new drive? If so, how can I check that Spotlight is running in the background (in activity monitor?). If I can work out when spotlight is finished I can judge whether the fans should be on or not.

Thanks :)
