MacBook Plus External Display

First post from a probable switcher, been lurking around here since about January.

I am trying to decide between a MB or MBP. One factor is the screen size. This will be my only computer, and I don't think I could go with a MB unless I have a larger display to go with it. I have read in a couple of threads that the MB sometimes has a hard time driving the external display, as there is sometimes some stuttering or chopiness. What I am not clear about is whether this only happens when using both displays, or if it also happens in clamshell mode. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've got a 2Ghz C2D with 2GB of RAM and regularly use a 17" widescreen monitor in addition to the MB screen and haven't experienced any problems or lag, in fact I've actually been pretty impressed with it.

I've used it in all three modes, just the external display, mirroring the MB display and as a dual monitor setup.
