Please help.

My previous charger (also a generic) died - so I bought a new (generic) one. The new one does not charge my battery. There is no light whatsoever. BUT, there is a lightening symbol over my battery - so my battery does not die, yet it doesn't charge.

Please assist as its annoying that a brand new charger doesn't work properly. Where does the fault lie? Is it software? Hardware? Also I had to replace the motherboard October 2015.

I have had the machine for 2 years so out of warranty. I am running on OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. its a 13",
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5,
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3,
Macintosh HD,
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB,
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012).

Thanks a million.

Don't use generic or unofficial chargers. Try a genuine one.

Try adjusting the connection to the Mac. My old 2012 MBP has gotten a bit finicky with the magsafe and I have to pull it out slightly and let it reconnect once or twice before I see the light.

The other advice is sound as well, the generic charger is probably the cause.

I've used nothing but a Lavolta charger since June 2015, and it's been fine, so I don't think non-original kit can be condemned out of a hand. In the OP's shoes I would try to find someone else with a Mac and try the charger on that.

So the battery won't charge, huh? Try to clean the connector on your mac and the connector on charger also. Sometimes you have to adjust many time to make it right (charging). If you use the charge to another macbook, is it charge?

I have had plenty of Macbooks not charge due to magnetic bits or dirt getting all stuck in the Magsafe port. What I do to clean the mag safe port is get a paper tower and spay some sort of cleaner (for example I use stainless steal cleaner on my macs and keeps them looking great) on the paper towel lastly get something like a tooth pick or a tiny flat head screw driver and just work at getting the grim out in and around the Magsafe port typically after doing a good cleaning like that it works perfectly once all that icky grim is out of the port and connectors.
