I am trying to help a friend who has a MacBook Pro 12,1 that will not charge. Although it will boot up and run when plugged in. The charging icon comes on with the lightning bolt but stays at 1%. All these symptoms exist with 2 different chargers.

The bootup diagnostics says:

"The battery may not be charging correctly.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer and the power outlet, then reconnect. Run the test again.
Ref: PPP003"

also

"The battery requires service.
It is not functioning normally, though you may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. You can continue to use your battery before it is checked, without harming your computer."

System Informations says:

When booted to System information (when plugged in) > Power says.

--Charging Information
Charge remaining: 0
Fully charged: no
Charging no
Full charge capacity: 5444

--Health info
Cycle Count 780
Condition: Service Recommended
Battery installed: yes
Amperage: 0
Voltage: 4342

--AC Charger Information
Connected: yes
Wattage: 85
Charging: NO

Anybody have any ideas?

Agreed with Sanpete.

Do you have a brick-n-mortar Apple Store anywhere near?
They'll do a battery replacement for $199.
For that you get:
- A new APPLE-FACTORY ORIGINAL battery
- Installation (if something goes wrong, they fix it)
- A short warranty.

Worth the money, in my opinion.
