I currently have a 2011 iMac which isn't ideal and really needs updating asap. I'm considering buying a 13 inch MacBook Pro 2016 but have a few worries about it. Mainly it's that in summer 2018 I'll be starting a computer science degree and I'm worried if I buy a MacBook now it'll be very much outdated then, with new a major new revamp by 2018.

What would your recommendations be?

Long gone
Wait a year. By then, the kinks should be out of the new model, and you'll have a laptop that will last you to the end of your degree.

iMacs and laptops are just different altogether. If you want a laptop in general, buy a MacBook. You can get previous years models pretty cheap. If you have a lot of money, get a new one. You asked if it will be outdated, but no one knows. The market has matured, so previous years models have not become outdated, but as to wether this will continue, is anyones guess.
