Hi everybody

as 4K Monitors are getting cheaper i considered buying one. But i stumbled over the spec of my MacBook Pro Mid. 2012

It has the internal Intel HD Graphics 4000 and the GeForce GT650M.

According to Apple Spec. (MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012) - Technical Specifications it is "only" supporting 2560 by 1600 on up to two external displays. But according to Nvidia (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gt-650m/specifications) the GT650M is supporting up to 3840 x 2160.

I have a miniDP to DisplayPort
So, the question is, can I run 3840 x 2160 30Hz in just one monitor 4k ???

Thx!

Your computer only has thunderbolt 1 it doesn't have the bandwidth to run a 4K screen, which was fair 5 years ago as you couldn't really buy one.

It will run it just not at 60Hz only 30 Hz and it will do that either on the TB1 or HDMI if you want 60Hz refresh rate then you will need a newer mac that simple really.

Yes you can using HDMI but only at 30Hz or 24 Hz so great for watching a film etc but not so much use with using it as a computer.

From apples website
HDMI
You can use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs at the following resolutions and refresh rates via the built-in HDMI port of your Mac:

  • 3840x2160 at 30Hz refresh rate
  • 4096x2160 at 24Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)
