Hi. Feel kinda dumb asking this, but from looking around here and the web, I am confused about the best (or only) way to connect my LG UltraFine 4K 23.5 inch and 5K 27 inch monitors to my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro. Can I just connect a thunderbolt cable to each monitor, or do I need to connect through a Thunderbolt dock?

Thanks!

Probably you will need to connect two thunderbolt cables. The LG UltraFine 5K does not support DSC which may make it impossible to connect both your monitors through a single Dock.

How I have my M1 Max 16" connected:
Left TB Port 1: LG 5K #1
Left TB Port 2: LG 5K #2
Right TB Port: CalDigit TB3 Plus Dock (That Dock has a DisplayPort out to a 4k Dell Monitor)

Everything works like a champ 4 screens (Laptop Screen, Dell 4K and Two LG 5K)

No issues, super smooth.

Your setup should work smoothly.
My MBP 16 Max shares our home office environment with my wife's Dell Laptop, so we have:
1. LG 4k connected via HDMI (Dell has not enough TB ports)
2. LG 4k connected via TB
3. Dockingstation via TB, attached to it USB headset, used also as power supply and provides LAN (+ mouse/keyboard for Dell, I use my Apple keyboard & mouse)

Both of us can use 3 monitors (2x LG + Laptop screen), power supply, LAN, headset etc by just plugging in 3 cables in the morning

I have a Late 2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max as well. I've been searching for a couple weeks for a great monitor for editing. May I ask you a few questions?
What model is your LG 5K monitor?
Do you use it for FCPX?
Any faults with it?
I would sincerely appreciate your input. Thanks
