Hi,
I'm on a 15" macbook pro with an intel i7 2720IQM, (2.2) and an AMD 6750m processor. It's the high end computer from early 2011. When plaing games, I notice that I cannot select the resolution of 1440x900 (native is 1680x1050). I can get 1440x1050, however not 1440x900, and I see other people playing on the same configuration as me at 1440x900. Why can't I get this option? It's a good medium in between 1280 and 1680. 1440 would be nice so I could even out my settings and framerate and keep my resolution sharp.

That's really an issue with the game itself, it's not a global thing. Most games allow you to set a custom resolution of whatever you want via a config file, so you could try that for each game you have an issue with.

I experience this problem with every single game installed on a windows/osx partition.

not sure since i do not own a macbookpro anymore but i'm not sure your resolution exists for mbp. look at blizzard wallpaper resolutions for their games as an example. the resolution you're asking for isn't there... and blizzard supports mac.

also don't forget some screens don't support all resolutions... if your next res is 1440x1050 then you won't get 1440x900. it has to do with screen size and chipset.

1440x900 has the same aspect ratio as 1680x1050, if I'm not mistaken. Also, I see youtube videos with people on high res (1680) screens setting their games to 1440x900. It's frustrating because I always like finding balances between resolution and framerate, and this computer won't play games there. Blizzard supports 1440x900 because Apple's baseline resolution, until their retina display, has been 1440x900, and many other PC computers are set natively to 1440x900.

I usually get an option for 1440x852 or 856 ( cant remember which :p) you cant even select 1440x900 in the system preferences in OSX (atleast i cant). the next lower one is what i wrote at the beginning and that either streched to fit or not

If you have the high resolution screen option I don't think the 1440x900 resolution is available. If you have the standard resolution screen then 1440x900 is the native resolution so will be available in your options. The people on the same configuration as you likely have the standard none high-def screen installed in their MBP.

If you are talking Blizzard games. They are a funny lot. They don't have an option for many various resolutions. And you can't edit their resolutions whiled in windowed mode.

But there is a solution.
For Diablo 3 -> you go here:
~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/Diablo III/D3Prefs.txt
And edit the preferences files to set the resolutions you want. Crazy you have edit a preference file to do this. And Blizzard just ignore the issue. But that's the fix and it works.

And for Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft, they have preferences files roughly in the same place, and you can edit those too to get the game resolutions you want.

This issue is not OS X exclusive. The Blizzard game windows clients have the same issue.

Yes. Funny this, I've played hundreds of Mac games right from Black and White 512k Mac games till today and the only ones I've ever been forced to edit a preferences file to change the in game resolution are the blizzard games.
