MacBook Pro 17 Fan

Hi,

My brand new macbook pro 17" arrived a few days ago, I've been testing it and I found that has the same problems that everyone is talking about on 17" threads, temp gets at 85º doing simples and short renders on maya.

So, I've also observed that my macbook is so silent that fans doesnt raise up speed even at high temperatures, the noise is always the same, at 20º just turn on or at 80 burning up. I found a lot of information about this problem on the 15" macbook, but not with the 17". apple firmware update doesnt apply for mine, and also I tried the reset of the fan contoller (dont know the exact name, just take out the battery and hold on the power button for 5-6 secs). And the result is the same, battery calibration lost but my fans doesnt raise up speed at any moment, they're always the same.

Any ideas? there will be a firmware update like with the 15"?

I wouldn't expect the 17 inch to be too different from the 15 inch in this respect. I have the same issue with my 15 inch. In every day use, I never hear the fans being high. Only when I run two instances of /dev/null after a minute or so they come on. There's a very silent background humm that might be the fans on low speeds, but generally I almost miss the sound of fans with the macbook.

whats "two instances of /dev/null" ?

I dont get fan high sound at any processor work, nor even at 100%. I just have the low continuous sound.

what I mean is you open a terminal and type yes > /dev/null [enter].

This makes two processes run in the background (one for each core) that use 100% of the CPU. To be honest, I don't really know what that command line does. Only that people here use it as a quick way to heat up their computers. When you're done, either type Ctrl-c or close the terminal windows.

Mine's been getting quite warm too, especially during World of Warcraft.

The solution I found, which works fairly well is buying a milk crate (used to hold files now), and modify it so that you can insert a fan in the bottom, lay the laptop on the top, and connect a mouse and keyboard and keep it running cool....well, not totally "cool" but "cooler"

ok thanks I'll try it later but I'm almost sure my fans wont rise up; I'm now install win xp with boot camp so cant try it.

Yeah that kind of solutions are ok but what worries me is that with the time my processor burns up or something; I already have the chance to return it to apple; I'm happy with it but that heat problem cant be good for the computer.

Last year my powerbook 12" warped around the edges because of hot. And it wasnt anything like this one!

Do you thing there will be a firmware update or something?

Isnt anyway to control by your self the fan throttle, something like always al 100% ? there would be some noise but at least computer would be safe

I tested the /dev/null

I'm using coreduotemp,

My CPU Usage has raised to 55% and the current freq of the processor is 2000 now, continued; he started at 2167, when approaching to 80º low to 2000 sometimes, just for a sec, and now it finally stats on 2000 at 77º.

The constant fan is still there like always, but now I hear a new sound, that started just now , also very low, maybe the mooo of the mbp 15. dont know.


whats obvious is that my macbook couldnt mantain the 2167 even for 3 minutes and that the fans are the same if its burning and the processor needs to be lowered. I dont understant it.

Is there anyway I could make the fans run at top speed? all the time I dont care about the noise.
