Hello all,

I'm having some trouble connecting my 2016 15" Macbook Pro (with touchbar) to my Dell S2340M external monitor (1920 x 1080 resolution with DVI port). Here's my current setup:
My monitors native resolution is 1920 x 1080 and only has a DVI or VGA port, which is why I'm going from thunderbolt to HDMI to DVI. I'm able to connect the laptop to the monitor but the resolution is fuzzy and a bit grainy even when I select the 1920x1080 resolution from the display settings off my Mac.

My question is whether this is a connectivity issue (i.e., wrong series of adapters), hardware issue (i.e., faulty product somewhere in the line) or simply a compatibility issue (i.e., need to upgrade monitor). Any help will be greatly appreciated. P.S. I know the monitor works with my windows desktop.

Thanks!

Does your monitor have a HDMI port? When I use to use an adapter it was a bit glitchy and now I just use a usb-c to hdmi cable and connect directly to the monitor and now it works perfect.

unfortunately not, it only has a DVI and VGA.. I'm wondering if switching to a monitor with HDMI will be better

OP:
Seems to me the going USB-c ---> HDMI ---> DVI is "too many conversions". Too much of a chance for problems.

I'd try a USB-c/DVI adapter like this:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p...MIupyvxq251wIVRJ7ACh27Vg7BEAQYASABEgI4o_D_BwE
(and then connect to the display with an ordinary DVI-to-DVI cable)

Or, if that doesn't work, I'd get a USB-c to VGA adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D99JCF...t=&hvlocphy=9003429&hvtargid=pla-312320898701
... and connect to the display with a VGA-to-VGA cable.

Having said all that, could it be time for a new 4k display...? ;)

Thanks for the suggestion! That's what I was thinking too, that I had too many "conversions" and should try to keep it simpler. A new 4K monitor isn't a bad route either..
