My laptop (2021 16" M1 Max running latest macOS 13.1) is not automatically going to sleep when closing the lid/screen. Not even when running on battery. It's been like this for the entire year that I've owned this laptop. I startet from a clean macOS install in december 2021 and then moved all my data manually from my old Mac.

If I go to the Apple Menu and choose Sleep, it goes to sleep. If you look at the attached graph, you can see that I disconnected the laptop from AC power at 12.00, and made it sleep using the Apple Menu. At 16.00 I picked up the laptop and used it for 2 minutes, and then closed the lid without choosing the Sleep option. Since then it's been consuming the battery, until I picked it up at 21.00 and made the screenshots. The laptop was a little warm so it's been running all the time.

I guess there can be 3 causes of this issue

1. Configuration issue
2. Application/process that prevents the laptop from automatically sleeping?
3. Hardware issue

1) What other options can I check, apart from the options in the screenshots below? Are there any config files etc that I can check?
2) How can I check which processes that might be preventing it from sleeping?
3) If none of the above solves the problem, how can I determine whether this is a hardware issue?

Same here on Intel model MBP 16' (2019), on MacOS Ventura 13.2

I have closed the lid and left mac untouched for a while. After I grab the laptop - it was warm, and 50% of battery was gone. Sometimes (in positive cases) machine could lost 10% of battery over night.

Checking "wakes from sleep" via terminal is not showing anomaly activity. My conclusion - apple make a new "battery drain" bug like it was before when bluetooth devices constantly waked the device and force it to drain energy. It is not hardware issue. Will try the same solution - turn off the BT and see what happens.

I know it's a bit like trying to see if the fridge light stays on when the door's shut, but ....

Does the screen go off when closed? On my MBA it goes off with the screen still over 5mm from fully closed.

Yes it turns off 5 mm before closing

Google pmset or read the man page in terminal for pmset. It is command line tool which controls macOS power management setting. All settings in one place, but bit more complicated to use. That will tell you what system has as parameters. You can change anything using this command directly, not searching through the GUI.

esben@Esbens-MacBook-Pro ~ % pmset -g System-wide power settings: Currently in use: standby 1 Sleep On Power Button 1 hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage powernap 1 networkoversleep 0 disksleep 10 sleep 10 (sleep prevented by runningboardd, backupd, powerd, coreaudiod, coreaudiod) hibernatemode 3 ttyskeepawake 1 displaysleep 10 (display sleep prevented by Google Chrome) tcpkeepalive 1 powermode 0 womp 0

Similar (I have M1 MBP16), but there is difference
System-wide power settings:
SleepDisabled 0
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by Jump Desktop, powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 5
tcpkeepalive 1
lowpowermode 0
womp 0

you are missing that systemwide SleepDisabled 0. Makes me wonder if the sleep is disabled. Try using admin account and see if there is the SleepDisabled.
You may want to reset this, one of the pmset commands is reset to default.
There may be corrupted plist related to this, forgot what the name is, but google will help. If you delete that, restart should create default settings.

Thank you! sudo pmset powernap 0 did the trick, I think.

I wonder why Power Nap is not available as an option in system settings anymore, even though it appears in search...
