Go to system preferences, go to sound, go to sound effects and see if play sound on startup is checked. If it is then un select it and then re select it. Reboot. Should work now.

yeah that seemed to have fixed it..I went to system preferences, unchecked the sound and checked it again, rebooted the laptop and I heard the chime..gonna see in a little bit when I connect the charger if I hear the chime for that too thanks so much was worried something funky was going on with the laptop

It happened to me when I had a 16" MBP. I don't know if possibly updating had anything to do with it or it was a software glitch. It is funny because I had the laptop volume turned up and the chime at start up was pretty loud but I din't notice it without the start up chime for about two reboots but then I was like why is it so silent when I turn on my Mac. Lol

I love the start up sound! Makes it feel like a Mac to me.

Glad it was an easy fix!

yeah I didnt notice it either til today, it was fine before yesterday and yesterday when I turned it on I was like oh maybe I just missed it til it happened again today..so yeah unchecking it and checking it again definately fixed it as I just plugged in the charger and I heard the chime so all good..thank you so so much I thought there was some sort of issue with the motherboard or something with the laptop and I never got applecare so I would have been screwed, so glad this was a simple check uncheck check fix LOL

I updated to Monterey 12.6 yesterday and my swipe between pages on the trackpad wasn't working, so had to go to settings to switch it on. might be the update if you've done one recently.
