I brought my MacBook Pro to the apple store because I was getting alerts saying I needed to replace my battery, I postponed it, but recently the screen went black.. and the keyboard is still lit up, I am most certain this is a battery issue. (Please let me know if it sounds like another issue) So the technician at the Apple store “Genius Bar”told me he can’t run a diagnostic, because the laptop won’t power on, and that he can’t replace the battery without replacing the top case… that the battery is connected to the keyboard etc. is this true..? He said he would charge me 700 for a top case and 200 for a battery replacement. (Sounds like a lie) and he said it’s going to cost around 1,000 dollars so I’m better off getting a new laptop.….I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch A1707

What are your thoughts ?

Sound about right. You or the Genius might have confused the terms of the case, but either way, Apple won’t replace the battery if the rest of the computer isn’t working.

Blank display is related to flexgate, not battery. A1707 is affected.

You basically had a failing battery followed by flexgate. Unfortunately, the latter isn’t covered and Apple won’t do the battery unless other parts are working.

A1707 is a 2016-2017 model, you may want to try a shop that works on older "supported", and even older vintage/obsolete equipment (they are not limited by Apple policies). They may be able to get the display to work and then replace the battery. My guess is a1707 will go to vintage status in 1-3 years.

I've used Mission Repair in the past for a (then 6 year old, now 14 year old) iPod classic that Apple would not repair (M. R. has/had an "interesting" life-time warranty for problems repaired); believe they charge shipping and will give estimates. There is also uBreakiFix (which has more walk in locations). I've not tried Best Buy (certified to do Apple warranty repairs, unsure of their out of warranty policies). Finally, you may have an independent shop that does Apple repairs (many of these have closed; check Yelp website or elsewhere for references).

You may also want to look at this thread on MacRumors:

At one time, the flexgate problem was covered under a special service arrangement (which may have expired).

I'm wondering if an external display could be connected so that diagnostics can be run (either mini-display port/thunderbolt, HDMI, or something else with the proper adapter/dongle).

Go back to the Apple Store (this is a REAL "Apple Store", not a 3rd party store that repairs Macs, right?).

See another genius. Ask if you qualify for the $199 battery replacement.
If he says no, POLITELY ask to speak to the manager.
See if he/she will help you.
