So I recently bought a MacBook Pro 13" on eBay from a rather large reputable eBay store. This eBay store has a lot of positive feedback. When the MacBook arrived, it was freshly formatted and in great shape. However, upon logging in I noticed a prompt for device enrollment with a specific company. I had never seen this before and learned about the Apple Device Enrollment Program or DEP that businesses can use.

When I asked the eBay store about it they said they buy a lot of computers from companies that liquidate their devices. Based off the reputation of the eBay store, I figured it might have been an oversight from the original company owner. The store offered a return but I decided to investigate and I contacted the previous company that held the DEP.

The company was able to release the MacBook Pro from the DEP once I explained the situation and background. I reformatted the MacBook Pro and the prompt is no longer showing. It looks like it was a success.

I think I will go ahead and keep the MacBook but just thought I would check and see if there is anything else that I am missing. Am I in the clear now that the device has been removed from the DEP from the original company? I should have complete ownership now, correct?

Yes now that the original company un-enrolled the serial number from Apple's DEP, you are in the clear.
Unless the company you contacted re-enrolls the serial number, you are good to go.

We do that all the time for staff that decide to buy out or leave the company with a corporate owned device.

DEP is used on our: Macbooks, iMacs, iPads, Apple TVs, and Minis.

Thank you. Just curious, why would a company re-enroll a serial number to DEP once it has been removed?
