I hope this is the right forumn for my home theater question, even though AppleTV is not involved.

I have my home theater components (dvd, receiver, and satelite box) in the basement, and the TV upstairs. I am running it all through an IR kit. I also have a Macbook Pro. Before my new home theater, I would use a mini-displayport+USB to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable to plug my computer into my TV, and then open iTunes, manually "move" it over to the TV, start a movie and go full screen to watch (and hear) a movie on my TV.

Now, with the receiver in the basement, if I want to use the surround sound to watch iTunes movies. The issue is, if I plug in the adapter, from the basement I cannot see the TV side by side, to move iTunes over, and set full screen, and all that.

Is there a way to default the Macbook to make the TV the primary screen when the adapter is plugged in, and it's outputting? That way, I can plug it into the receiver in the basement, and then head back upstairs and use my iPhone Remote to play my iTunes movies, or VLC or whatever.

Thanks all.

Try going into Settings --> Displays --> Arrangement and dragging the top thin line (which represents a menu bar) to the TV. It will set your TV as the main screen and should remember that setting for next time you plug in your Macbook.
