in a pineapple, under the sea
Hi all,

I upgraded to the latest 13" MBP in June this year (2.53 C2D, 4GB Ram, 250GB HD), and have just discovered that Steam is now available for Mac's. Does anyone know if Left 4 Dead 2 will run, as it just seems to hang when I try, even though the game is fully downloaded to the Mac? I presume that I'm missing something, but I'm not sure what.

The game seems to start loading and a console opens in the dock, not that its selectable, but then nothing moves on from there....

Anyone able to offer advice?

Cheers

p.s. the game will play just fine when I boot into Windows 7 on the same machine...

Yes it will play. Something is clearly going wrong on your software end. I'd recommend deleting Steam from your OS X partition and reinstalling it (and hence L4D2), as well as checking you are fully up to date with software updates from Apple.

cheers for the reply peskaa, If I uninstall Steam will it remove the game files as well?

Its just that my broadband is impossibly slow at 1meg, and the game took two days to bloody download! But, if this is what I must do to get it working, then I shall.

The MBP is fully up to date with Apple etc, as is Steam. The only other Mac game I have on Steam is Galcon Fusion and that refuses to play as well, So I am guessing that you are right in it being a software issue

You can remove just Left4Dead and leave Steam on your computer. In your library (in the Steam application), right click on L4D and you will have the option to remove local content. That will let you remove L4D and reinstall it.

cheers Savvos but I was hoping to only have to re-install Steam and not the game as it takes forever to download on my crappy connection.

I will try uninstalling the lot, and then re-installing over the next couple of days...

Yes, it'll remove everything. As you've got such a slow connection, then its probably worth holding that idea in reserve for a while...

One thing you can try is to right click on L4D2 in Steam, and then chose the Verify Integrity option. This makes Steam look at all your files and make sure there are no problems - if there is, it'll re-download the files to fix the problem.

Secondly, you're definitely running the Mac version of the software, not the Windows version through Fusion/Parallels etc?

I had issues with L4D2 not playing when I updated the MacOS; I ended up having to delete the game & reinstall it, and it's worked fine ever since.

You could save your game content by moving them out of ~Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps before you uninstall Steam and move the files back after you reinstall Steam to avoid having to download them again.
