I received my Macbook Pro 2019 last week and I been using it everyday. I never fully charge it to 100%. I read that charging it too 80% expands the battery so I leave it unplugged then when it drops down below 50% I plug iit into the charger toi 80% and repeat.

My question is that I checked my cycle and it is already up to 8 cycles this is after using the Macbook for about 7 days. Is that number high or is it normal?

I wouldn't be horribly concerned with cycle count. If you enable (or left enabled) the battery health management feature the OS should handle this for you and you should just plug it in and charge it as needed, including up to 100%.

I've turned this feature off, I've had my 2019 16" for about 3 months now with 45 cycles on the battery and I'm hovering between 97.5 and 98% battery health. I sometimes run it down to 30% remaining and charge it to 100%.

If your Mac starts at 75% battery and you use it down to 25%, and then recharge to 75%, that's half a cycle.

My concern now its up to 9 cycles is that I only been using this for about 10 days so is it high already. I never let the battery get below 50% and I only charge it up to about 80 to 85% after which I run on battery.

Mine is 4 weeks old, 10 cycle counts. I leave mine plugged in most days while I work. Take it around the house a bit too running on battery in the evenings. I don't pay attention to my charge cycles, and often don't plug it back in until it's completely dead. But then it may sit on my desk for a few days plugged in while I work on it every day. So that's my usage and cycle count for a month.
I wouldn't bother watching them so closely just use it like you would.

Also, my old laptop I didn't pay attention to cycle counts either. Just sent it into apple for the keyboard replacement program (it had sticky keys and I was about to sell it to fund my new laptop). They put in a new battery in that old laptop for free. Sold it with 0 cycle counts. So in the end it wouldn't have benefited me to watch cycle counts for the years I had it anyway.

Could the battery have cycles on it already? I got it certified refurbished from Apple but it came in mint condition.

in that case, most likely ...
I wouldn't worry too much about cycle count, and, those batteries are designed to do more discharge than what you're doing but up to you

The battery defiantly has some age to it. Coconut battery shows its 180 days old. I also used it for about 3 days and got one full cycle out of it.

I think the problem with "expanding batteries" is not from "charging it to 100%", but rather leaving the charger on all the time.

So... charge it right up to "full", and then take it "off charge" again until you run down to, say, 35% or so. Then recharge.

My 2010 MBP still has the original battery and still works well enough.

Guys... Apple devices today have so many smart features built in. Batteries are so good quality nowadays. You really think that you can help improving your battery life by plugging your cable out and in and the right times?

It might improve 1-2% percent, but it's seriously not worth the hassle. If you work at a desk, leave it plugged in and don't worry about it.

Okay mine is now 12 cycles. The past two days I left it plugged in all the time except when putting it away. I then discharged it to about 55% after which as soon as I plugged it in it used a cycle which is not right as that is not no full cycle. What is up?

So I charged my Macbook to 85% then the next day it did not sleep properly it was 8% battery. I charged it to about 85%. I used it and charged it again to 85% and the cycle count is still 13. I don't think it that accurate. It could have said 13 but really was 10 or 11 cycles.
