Hello all,

Do i need to get a new battery?

here i am, trotting along at 40%-45%, running on battery power, sitting on the toilet and checking my email... and it all goes black. doesn't restart. i turn the computer over and press the little button on the battery, and nothing happens. no led's. i take the battery out to make sure it has not exploded, put it back in, and then it restarts. seconds later it goes black. no blinking lights on led. plug it in and it works....

any suggestions?

a trip to the apple store and a free new battery?

I'd personally take it into the nearest Apple Store and just make sure they fix the issue before you leave the store (unless it requires repair.

If it fell off a cliff, you will not get a new battery unless you have AppleScare. If it hasn't fallen off a cliff, and just started doing this, go to teh AS, and get a new battery.

My TiBook battery did the exact same thing about a year ago. All of the typical reconditioning practices did nothing. It would get to about 80% and then die. When I plugged it in the computer would start up and the battery would then read 0%. A new battery solved this problem. The new battery is still working well so the problem seems to be isolated with the old battery. If you are within your warranty or have AppleCare take it in and get a new battery. :)

Way too much information.

toilets just don't seem like the proper place to be working on a computer...

My Rev A Mac Book Pro has a battery that's dead. It will not work unplugged without turning itself off.

Apple is turning into Dell faster than I can say, "how many people do you know who've had failed hard drives on their Macs?"

There's about 10 posts on this subject. I'm just cutting and pasting my response to everyone, 'cause I'm so pissed about it.

That probably has something more to do with age than anything else.

I laid down some pwnings playing Medal of Honor online while on the crapper, and that was with a trackpad!

Nothing like hiding with a STG and getting easy headshots. :D

Hehe :) Yeah I didn't really specify the age of the battery in my now ancient computer. It was actually the second battery that displayed this funny method of dying, that which whyrichard described as falling off the cliff. It was very noticable to me mainly because the first battery went in a more normal manner having significantly shortened battery life but with the charge indicator going from 100 -> 0% smoothly.

Third battery is a high capacity NewerTech which I am loving. :)

I can use my black MacBook for about 2x longer than my 15" MacBook Pro.

On average:

MacBook (black) - 4 hours
MacBookPro 15" - 2 hours and a bit.

Hmm, screen bright? I can get three if my screen's not bright and I'm doing simple internet work. ;)

Apple replaced the battery today. I asked if it had anything to do with my Rev A computer getting so hot, and would the new battery fail as well. They said no.

I'm skeptical, but we shall see.

I have an early MacBook Pro, although not one of the few that had their batteries recalled. Although I'm not seeing the battery "fall of cliffs" according to coconut battery, my battery's capacity is going down way faster then it ever did on my old iBook. I'm kind of worried. My old iBook lost less then 100 mAh in the 6 months and 50 or so cycles it had.

Are other people seeing similar declines in battery life? I'm probably just over reacting, although I do calibrate monthly.
