Hi all.

I have a 2019 16" macbook pro. I upgraded to big sur but this issue happened previously.

When ever I close the lid and reopen, well over 60% of the time the laptop either comes up powered down, or if the computer comes out of sleep the scree freezes forcing me to cold boot.

I have searched for an answer for this for well over 6 months but every solution doesn't work. I have a VPN which I disable before closing the lid which was one solution. I am trying to find some kind of app/program that can tell me a log of what is happening when the reboot starts or freezes. Is there such a thing?

Has anyone else come across this?

Really? 131 views, and no one has any opinion? Or no one has had anything similar?

Hey!

I think you provided the "key" context - you trying to solve the issue over 6 months end it was no good. What the chance that forum folks could tell you something new? I bet to "zero". :)

Anyway, you mentioned that issue was before the BigSur, so there is only one solution I can recommend:
1) Install clean OS. Or better - make an external backup and format your storage completely, and then install the fresh OS
2) If the issue is still there - go to a service center, I think it is a hardware malfunction.

This was happening to many people since the release of macOS 11, in most case upgrading from the previous OS without a clean install cause that issue, you should probably do a clean install.
