I posted this in buying advice but did not get alot of feedback. I have to make a quick decsion. I currently have a MBP core duo. I just bought a MB core2duo. one will go to another family member the other will be my computer. I do note do any graphics work. is C2D a big deal. What should I do I dont want to upgrade my laptop for atleast 2 years.

Regardless of what you do, unless your family member is REALLY important to you, I'd give them the Core Duo, and keep the C2D. It's still a great gift. Sounds selfish I know, but oh well. :)

I don't think you understood the OP. The Core Duo is a MacBook "Pro" the Core2Duo is a MacBook. I say keep the MBP

assuming you have no issues with either laptop,

why would u trade a honda (mb) w/ an acura (mbp)?

I think he said that he does "not" do graphics work. He might not need the power of the MBP. Nonetheless, I believe the CD MBP is better than the MB. But that's just me.

MB performance

still undecided. benchmarks seem better on MB c2d than MBP CD. Also 1.5 hour battery on MBP vs 3.5 on MB. I will try to refind the link

1.5 hour of battery life seems really low. I get 3.5 - 4 hours on my 1.83 MBP.

Did you calibrate your battery?

I can easily stretch it to 4 hours on my MacBook Pro, not sure where you get your battery times from

Well, MB C2D maybe better than MBP CD in SOME aspect, however, any gaming you do, the GPU is going to help alot. By the way, I think MBP is going to run windows Vista better than the MB...

Just keep the one you like best, eh?
(I'd keep the mbp since it has a larger screen, nicer casing, a good gfx etc. the c2d wont do much of a difference in the mb if you're just a "normal" user anyways)

Honestly, I'd keep the MBP. If you're not doing hardcore stuff, that larger screen and nicer housing is just appealing, and you do have dedicated graphics card for the later OS's that may be more intense in visuals (just a thought?)

But if you're wanting portability, the MB c2d hands down, smaller, easier to carry around, and it does have the newer processor, 64bit, and the wireless N card, granted its not activated... But sooooon!:D

I am going to go against the crowd here and suggest you keep the MB core2duo. Why?

It's smaller and more portable (the body is smaller, weighs less and also the adapter is small and weighs less too)
the display while not as bright also doesn't have the infamous grain. It's evenly illuminated and has smooth solid colors.
Wireless reception is much better (I get a list of 15 networks on the macbook and only got 5 on the mBPs I had)
battery life is better (I would get around 2.5 hours of normal use with the MBP and I easily get 3.5 with my macbook with the same average use). Of course this depends on your use, but the macbook has better battery life regardless.
the latchless display is simly a stroke of genius. The MBP will get that eventually.
Hard drive is easily changed by the user (again, the MBP will have that in the future)
the LCD can be tilted back slightly more than the MBP, which means you can actually use it in your lap and still get an optimum viewing angle. With the MBP, I was constantly trying to adjust when it was in my lap and it was almost impossible unless I slouched and let my knees collapse so that I was laying back on the chair and the MBP was lower in the back than the front. Ridiculous. The macbook gives you JUST enough tilt to allow a good angle.

the other thing is that if I remember correctly unless you've got the 17" mbp you've got a dual layer burner in the c2d mb which means you can use those fancy expensive as hell DVD-Rs.

Also keep in mind the mb should have more ram than the mbp even though it looses a little for the integrated graphics card.

My fear is 32 bit will not be support in the future. I have an opportunity to switch to a 64 bit machine. Its kinda like everyone said buy a ppc the transition will take a long time, it was over fast. while apple still supports ppc I am not looking to buy one now or 6mts ago. the question is futureproofing which will be supported longer? How inportant is 64 bit

Okay so I just had this dilemma as well and am choosing the MB over the MBP. I am in love with this freaking lil thing. It's awesome. I'd go for the Macbook, but that's just me. :D

Btw, wow, disregard my last comment a few posts above. :p

The MBP CD is actually slower than MB C2D if you look at the macworld and other performance tests. The only reason to keep the MBP is if you do extensive 3D work, or need a larger screen. For 2D work the MB C2D is actually faster. Also, for a larger scrreen, you can get a 19" display for less than $200 nowadays and have the benefit of two screens to work on.

I would keep the MB...

Definitely keep the MBP, you only lose about 15% processor speed which you wouldn't notice most of time, but you get all other important thing.
