Macbook Pro ....Crashing???

My Macbook Pro keeps crashing. I get a screen saying to press the powerbutton to restart. Then sometimes when I turn it on it BEEPS or i get nothing.

I added an extra 1GB last week with no problems. I now removed the 1GB and waiting to see if it still happens.

Do you think it is the 1GB CHIP? Has it gone bad since nothing happened for a week....

3 beeps? what does that mean or 2 . If it happens again i will count them but i hope it doesnt.


I took out the extra ram and it seems better...

anybody want to buy a 1GB chip lol
 
Sounds like a kernel panic, and bad RAM can certainly cause that. If you feel like it, you can run the Apple hardware test without the extra RAM, and then again with the RAM. I'm willing to bet that when you test it the second time, it will tell you that your memory has failed the test. This just happened to my mom's ibook after we installed a brand new RAM chip. Exchange it with the retailer if you just bought it, and make sure you're getting the right kind for your computer. :)

Probably the Ram... where can i find the Hardware test?
 
I'm willing to bet it is bad RAM... why? Because I ran into this same exact problem with my PowerBook G4. You can run the Apple Hardware Test from your system disc. I forget which key you hold upon boot-up, so I'm sure someone can fill you in on that. I forget what brand name my RAM was, but when it pops into my head, I'll be sure to tell you. I know it was a cheap-o one CompUSA gave me. :mad:

My ram is by Princeton... Not sure, it was working fine for about 1 week. Strange...
 
What made mine crash was when I started to do something that would be processor heavy or something that required a good amount of RAM. It would usually happen in Photoshop. I still can't remember the brand of RAM I had, but it definitely wasn't Princeton. Anyway, try the hardware test. I think the key you hold at boot-up is C. I may be wrong, though, so someone please correct me if I am.

Depends on which of the above posters you're replying to but in te case of the MacBook Pro, which the original poster is talking about, the lower slot failure affects Revs A-D of the G4 15" PowerBook.

Rev E's are not affected as far as I know (They use an updated chip set with DDR2 RAM) and it's highly unlikely the MBPs would be too (though it's probs too early to tell).

To the OP> It definitely sounds like bad RAM. Send it back. :)

I understand that lower slot failure referred to in that article is for the PowerBook. My point is, had Acehigh's MacBook beeped three times, it would be the RAM slot.
Beep codes are standard on every Mac and having one Mac beep does not necessarily mean a widespread issue with a particular model.

Got A Brand New Macbook Pro From The Store Today In A Sealed Box And Brand New Receipt So I Can Return It Till April 2! This Is Probably Going Back To The Store Or Might Sell It....

I Will Use My Mac Mini For Now (till That Is Sold) And Buy A Mac Mini At Costco! ($699...applecare 1.42/512/superdrive Wireless Mouse And Keyboard! So Abour $750 With Tax!)
 
One of my memories in PMG5 suddenly failed after a year of use.
Now I know that memories die for no reason.

Good thing is that memory is the easiest to replace & cheapest to buy.

I jumped up and down in joy when Memtest game me a bad ram!!

I think the memory which was bad in the machine was the one I installed. Probably nothing wrong with the machine but when they replace the memory the guy said if anything is wrong with it bring it back and we will give you a new machine... I really didnt think they will give me a Sealed one with a new receipt since it been 4 weeks.

No flippin way. I've often spent more money on RAM than on any other computer part (proc, hard drives, case+psu, whatever). It falls under one of the more expensive storage methods.

Trust me, if it was the cheapest to buy, I'd be jumping all over that Gigabyte iRAM memory-based storage device - alas, the card and 4 sticks of 1gb ram is about $500.
