Hi all,

After 7 years of use, the display on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) seems to be dying. There are horizontal black lines which get worse as I use the Mac over the course of the day. When I went to my local Apple Store, the Genius said that the LEDs on my screen are slowly dying due to heat. I have noticed that my Mac becomes quite hot with use as well.

He quoted me £589 ($753 for folks outside the UK) to replace the screen, which I felt was a bit steep and not worth the expense for an old Mac that is overheating anyway. I know that I'll be able to find a shop that will replace my MacBook Pro display for much cheaper in London, but wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with such shops? Do they tend to work, or is it a waste of money? I don't imagine that a 2017 MacBook Pro display is a particularly hard thing to change, hence the ask.

Looking forward to your responses! Cheers

It’s a gamble. For me, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze on a computer of that age, and I don’t need the aggravation of dealing with the inevitable issues. But YMMV.

Most repair places in my city offer a warranty period. Six or twelve months is not uncommon. I would imagine if any repair anomalies were to arise they would do so within that period. Ive never had a screen replacement but my brother in law's was repaired on a high street repair store and has had zero issues other than true-tone not being available in settings which I believe is universal with 3rd party Mac display replacement?

I replaced my broken iMac screen for similar money at 5 year old but it was before the m chips and before we’ve had such a massive leap in performanc. i think with macbook airs starting at £999 and being way more powerful than your current model I’d be upgrading.

I purchased a dying/dead 2018 MBP on Ebay for the screen and replaced it myself. Was a breeze, did the same with the battery but wasn't as easy. That said, if the machine is going to die soon anyway, just save the money you would have spent on repairs and apply to a new one.

I would have thought that's the GPU failing, rather than the display itself, which would mean a new logic board.

Either way: you need to consider how many years you plan on getting out of your already seven-year-old Mac, which already stops at Ventura; and how much you're prepared to invest in that.
