Macbook Pro due for GFX upgrade?

Since the MBPs were launched with the X1600 wouldn't it be about time for an upgrade soon? What are the best mobile GFX's today, X1650?
Also since AMD now bought ATI, perhaps they'll go back to nVidia?
Thoughts?

I'm tempted to get myself an MBP, but I really dont want to pay 25% more just
for 128MB more of VRAM. 128MB just seems so little.

BTW, I sold my black macbook this monday, timing

Similarly are you a student? You can get it for nice prices as a student.

They are not going to update the vid card until the next major update which is probably 6+ mos away. The x1600 may actually be the best card currently available that meets the space/thermal requirements for the MBP.

I'm trying to get the ball rolling now, so I'll say less than 6 months. God, when IS Santa Rosa going to arrive.

Joking aside, I believe they will update the MBP around Spring '07. That way they can dump in Santa Rosa, Leopard and a few other minor updates. The same time the iMac will see a bit of a guts refit, Mac Pro will be before Christmas so will be merely an OS change and the Mini and MacBook will follow around April/May.

Yeah, really, for a 1" thick 15" laptop, there aren't a whole lot of better options out there for video cards. I believe that ATI has an X1700 out, and NVidia also has the GeForce 7700 coming out (possibly already available), both of which are incremental improvements over the comparable X1600 and GeForce 7600.

I'm not a student, but I can get it for a "nice price" as I do not have to pay any tax.
It's still too much of gap between the 128 & 256 model though IMHO.

Thing is, I'm moving from europe to asia in a few months and I'm hoping for an update before that. If I get one now and there'll be a new one with a better gfx, new casing & Leopard just before I go it'd hurt..
