Macbook Pro DVD-R showing up as CDR

Okay... I used an insignia VCR to DVD dubber, and recorded onto a Memorex DVD-R. When I put it into my computer... it mounts as a CDR with no files on it. When I put it into a DVD player, it doesn't load at all... do I need to use DVD+R or what is the deal?
