Macbook Pro Fan Died

Well, it was around a week ago the left fan in my Macbook Pro started sounding like a John Deere tractor. I thought maybe there was some foreign object or particles lodged in there or something, and when I would smack the side of the case the fan would sound fairly normal.

Since the laptop is over a year old, and doesn't have Apple Care, I didn't want to go through the trouble (and money) of taking it to the Apple Store. The other morning when I fired the baby up, It seemed the fan noise had returned to normal, only, the fan wasn't spinning at all.

So, now I'm sitting here with only one fan working. I looked up the price of a new fan and found they cost 50 BUCKS!? 50 BUCKS FOR A FAN?! What the crap? Is there any place i can find these for a more reasonable price? And what would Apple charge to replace one of these? With all the other people having strange noises emanating from their fans I would think Apple would issue some sort of recall. Do I really have to spend 50 freakin' dollars for a new fan?


Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
$50 sounds like a good deal to me considering the price of the machine overall. I'd gladly pay that much to have mine replaced.
 
I dont know what the effects of not changing your fan in a timely manner could be, but if I were you I'd pay the 50$ rather than take a chance of frying your computer.

Anyway I was gonna offer a solution through ifixit, but it turns out the fans they sell are not only 50$ but you're gonna have to install it yourself too. So just pay 50$ and forget about it.
 
Apple would probably charge a pretty penny. Go for the 50 bucks (unless you do not feel comfortable installing a new fan yourself, then have Apple or someone trustworthy do it).
 
Planned Obsoletion

These fans are weird... I have had my macbook pro for a year and two months now and the left fan just went out today. I downloaded smcFanControl in order to view the status of my fans and it said the left fan is running at 000rpm while the other is running at 1000rpm... So to me that means it is dead. I have an appointment to talk to a Genius tomorrow at the Apple Genius Bar but I know I will have to pay money to get this crap fixed...

That is not the only thing wrong with my computer though... The spring in the monitor that keeps it open toughly is loose and the monitor closes when it is shut too much.... And also, the lights underneath the keyboard only light up under the middle of the keyboard and are unlit around the rest....

I think the first gen macbook pro's of last year had some planned obsoletion, that way mac could get some money out of making people buy another computer if they had not chose to buy the apple care protection plan...

However, I am paying to get my computer fixed, because it is a good machine, and I can get another year out of it at least...
 
For a normal computer fan, $50 would be VERY expensive. However this is a custom shaped fan made to apple's specs which probably costs them a bit extra.
Still I doubt it costs them much more than $5.

You'll probably have to spend another $50 having it installed.
 
Well, you could run on one fan, but then I wouldn't want to bet on how long the system went before barbecuing the processors.

Or you could spend, a relatively cheap, 50 dollars and keep your system running. (This assumes that you have the technical skills to pull your laptop apart......I know I don't.......)

I would say go for it, sounds like a fairly simple solution, and really doesn't cost much either.
