I plan on buying a 15" MBP next month and just wanted to know how well it will do for gaming. The main reason I am buying one is for music recording, a little bit of photo editing and just general use. NOTE: I'm not trying to buy a gaming computer, I'm just curious. Should it be able to play newer games? What's the extent of what it can play?

Macbook Pro For Gaming?

There are lots of threads on here on that subject so I recommend doing a search for the game that you're looking for. When I bought mine I also did a search on youtube for Macbook Pro + whatever game I was looking for.. generally you'll find some screen caps of a Macbook Pro playing that game.
In short it's a very capable laptop.. that hasn't had problems playing everything I've pushed on it, whether it be Crysis, AoC, Company of Heroes or any of the Half-Life 2 games. Hope this helps!

Ya I agree, there have been a ton of posts about this topic. The latest macbook pro will definitely be able to handle any of the games out there today, except for possibly Crysis. I plan on getting one this summer to be ready for Starcraft II and Diablo III when they come out.
As I have mentioned on many other threads, the MBP can play any game, even Crysis. Assuming you are willing to cut the quality and resolution low enough. I have Crysis, and can successfully play it, and it is great fun, on a 128MB 8600M GT 2.2 SR MBP. Now, not that VRAM is that important, but the min system reqs require a 256MB. So I'm sure one of the new ones, with 256 or 512, will handle Crysis OK. At least on the minimum graphics settings.
This will actually be my first Mac and I don't have much experience with one other than playing around on my brothers blackbook.

Most games are PC only. A few good ones make it the OSX though. They are generally more expensive and harder to find in stores. If you don't plan on gaming too much, don't bother getting Windows. Check what is available for OSX and see if you anything suits you.
M8, for a lot of games unfortunately you'll need to bootcamp it, sorry to say. But I am playing Age of Conan on Mid/High and it runs very well.
Also, if you're recording, I'd recommend an external soundcard with the MBP, SigmaTel just doesnt cut it. Esp. if you're doing live stuff, for midi and electronic though, you should have no issue.

I do a ton of gaming, ALL of it in Mac OS X. I could reboot to Windows, but I don't--the hassle (and wasted HD space) of gaming in Windows is unacceptable to me.
But it depends WHICH games you want: if you have to have a game that doesn't have a Mac version, then the Windows option is there, and that's nice to have.
Also, some gamers prefer to game in Windows because the games were specifically made FOR Windows and then ported to Mac. Using the "original platform" has some performance benefits, and often means you get patches quicker. But for me, those benefits aren't worth the downside of rebooting to Windows.
If you want to find out what games are on Mac, search Amazon.com for the game name and "mac." (They also have decent prices and free shipping.)

However, some games that have been announced for Mac without a specific date (like Starcraft 2, Gears of War and Rage) aren't on that list
I've never actually done any recording before so hopefully it should be enough for now. I'd mostly be recording guitar. But if need be I can always pick one up later. So if I were to boot Windows, XP would probably be the way to go?
Low settings. Maybe Med-Low. But if Shaders and Shadows are on Low, nothing else matters.
yeah, im running vista for the dx10 stuff, but XP takes less space, in all whatever floats your boat.
