It was given another CPU option when the Macbooks received a minor update.

Releasing an update just after adding another CPU option doesn't seem right.

Furthermore there are no real updates that can be done right now, not for awhile (2-3 months)
 
The trouble is... has it truly been updated?

It is like saying that just because the Mac Pro has received the Octo-Core option means the entire line has been updated.

This is philosophically deep.
 
When I spoke to an Apple sales member via the online store chat, he did inform me that the MacBook Pro CPU extra is considered an "update".

The thing is, if I wait until January, I may as well wait until a complete redesign/proper update.
 
To me, when the Model Identifier in System Profiler changes for the update I call it a "real update".

That's how Apple distinguish different models too.

The 2.6GHz MacBook Pros are still called "MacBook Pro 15"/17" (Mid-2007)" AFAIK.
 
I agree with the OP.

Or looking at it the other way: if they were going to release an updated line this month, why would they have added the 2.6GHz option when they updated the Macbooks instead of waiting a couple of weeks?

to keep them further from the macbooks
 
The 2.6 option was just to placate MBP purchasers over the holidays. As a $250 extra, it's not a product update at all, just an optional tweak to a 6 month old offering.

So is this thread asking for speculation about future updates, what we think the mbps will see at MacWorld, or...what exactly?
 
wait, what was the other update, or is this referring to the 2.6 option?

i hope steve jobs reads stupid mac geek forums like this so he sees how high the demand on new MBP's are.

The only other update to the macbook pros was back in June when the 15.4" got LED backlighting and SR chips. Otherwise, the current macbook pros remain unchanged since then except for the 2.6 option.
 
I guess it's as much an update as it's a "no updates until after Christmas" hint. What would have been raging in the mac community if the macbooks and macbooks had identically CPUs? Whine and annoyance but Apple kind of discourages that with the new moron-option to 2.6 GhZ.
I am just blurting stuff out, hell, as early as two weeks ago I was certain there would be no macbook updates until January and look what happened :rolleyes:
 
Not really an update, since theyre all BTO options

If you walked into an apple store, they'd still be selling the same models that we're available in July. No 2.6ghz/200+gb hdd
 
If adding a new option is an update - then Apple users must have the lowest expectations in the world.

I put a new HDD in my MacBook. Is it now a new product? No. It's just got an upgrade. Upgrade != Updated product.

They dropped the 2.6 in to allow people to stuff the MBP further ahead of the MB if they want to.

A significant update should happen in January. I have an MB and I'm waiting till Jan to buy an MBP. The MBP as it stands now is not good value, even for a Mac product.

Graphic Card got upgraded as well, that's a big change.

I'll guess right away that the /A suffix is just to indicate there are further system configurations available. Note that the 17 inch has had the /A suffix since the HD screen option has been available.

Even if he does, do you think it would really matter? This board represents a few thousand niche users. Their market is the general, stupid, public. They don't know the difference!
 
and if they do get Penryn in January...

If MBP's do get Penryn in January, what would be the impact of that change for the average user?
